Think of the Animals. Think of their Nature. Soon they might be wiped off the face of the earth.

I would like to thank Mrs. Balogh for giving us permission to host a table at the BBQ, and for her exceptional support. I would also like to thank Mrs. Henderson for her encouragement and her help with organizing everything. Last, but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Mazer for his help in making and producing these awesome products that were selling like HOT CAKES!

Legacy Updates
The lyrics for the song 'Legacy' have been published and copied.
However, lyrics don't really help our instrumentalists.
So, our new format is an instrumental sheet, complete with chords and notes.
I know it's been a long road, but things are coming together!!!
If you wish to acquire a sheet, please contact Horse Lover.
THANKS!!!

Barn Owls (Tyto Alba)

Soaring through the night, his wings flap silently as he searches for prey. Tuning his incredible hearing towards the ground, a mouse squeaks deep inside its burrow. Turning swiftly, he heads into a kill dive. Rushing straight down, he speeds towards the sound. As he ascends again, a dead mouse is hanging from his beak. He flutters silently towards a nest in the loft of an abandoned barn. His mate awaits him.
Barn owls have become endangered because they love to roost in old barns. When demolishing crews come to tear the barn down, they don’t look for barn owls and nests. Many owls are killed by demolishing crews. Others are killed by pesticides. People set out rat poisons. The rats eat the poison. When the barn owl comes to kill it, the poison has not yet reached its system. Thus, the barn owl gets poisoned as well. This can be seriously affective if the owl in question is pregnant. The baby will become affected by the poison and most likely either weaken its immune system or kill it within weeks. An owl cannot survive like that.
Long ago, farmers believed barn owls to be evil. They called them ‘demon owls’, or ‘ghost owls’. Many a farmer would find a barn owl in its barn, only to kill it on the spot. This legend is discouraged now, and very few deaths are caused by beliefs in the old tale.
Barn owls have a lifespan of approximately two years, due to poisoning and destruction. In reality, one can live up to twenty years. They have a huge wingspan of 75-110 cm, and have long legs as well. Many barn owls are distinguished from other owls with their heart-shaped face and pale extremities. A strong female would weigh 550 grams or more; a male will be 10% lighter. Contrary to other owls’ eyes, the barn owl has brown and black eyes. Many other species have yellow and amber eyes. Their talons are usually black, and, against popular belief, the barn owl does not hoot. Instead, it produces a scream-like shree that is ear-splitting at a nearby distance. Males in courtship will give a shrill twitter.
Although barn owls are not critically endangered, we still need to keep an eye on their numbers. The government has banned the poison that once wiped out barn owls, and now construction crews are advised to check lofts of old barns before eliminating. Barn owls are making a good comeback.

Do, Re, Mi... Man, you're outta Tune!
We have exciting news!
I'm sure you remember from the February bulletin that ACL has a 'theme song'.
Progress is moving quickly, and we should be done after two or three more practices.
I think we're good enough to go into the talent show!!!
(Ahem, cough, cough, Striker.)
We have a full-blown orchestrated band, with a violinist, two guitarists, a drummer, a pianist, and a gajillion singers!!!
Keep practicing at home.
OR ELSE!

The one and only new Closer Look Bank Account.
A Closer Look has decided that there will be a new bank account for storing money and to send checks to WWF (A.K.A World Wildlife Fund) to adopt animals. We have not chosen which bank we will have our account in but it will probably be in Canada Trust or Royal Bank of Canada.

“I don’t see why they need to tape up posters all over the school. I mean, it’s the first day, I don’t need people nagging me to join their clubs and whatnot.”
My best friend, Melanie Watson was grumbling on the first day of school, as usual. She’s a great kid, but she’s really pessimistic.
I sighed. “Mel, you’ve been hyper about going back to school ever since the first day of summer vacation. You were so excited yesterday. Why are you so realistic?” “C’mon, Ivy, you know the only reason I was hyped up was because I needed more clothes for the first day of school. We’re in grade 7, you should be happy, cute boys, note passing...” she trailed off.
“Ivy? Are you listening to me?” I didn’t answer. I was too busy looking at a poster that was pasted just above the gym doors. ‘Join A Closer Look Foundation! We are dedicated to saving the animals around the world that could die out very soon! Our mission is to raise awareness for endangered animals.’
Wow. That sounded really awesome.
I turned to Melanie. She grinned. “Come on, Ivy, you’re joking, right? Who would want to join some random club for ‘Saving the Animals’?”
She made quotation marks with her freshly painted fuchsia nails.
“Who really cares?”
That was it. I loved my friend, but her petty fashion statements were getting a bit annoying.
I snapped.
“Mel, just because you’re a shop-a-holic, doesn’t mean you have the right to diss this club. I think it sounds rad. So stop trashing every club you see, okay?”
I stopped my ranting, out of breath.
Melanie grinned.
“Sure thing, Miss Activist. Whatever you say.”
“I am NOT an activist! Are you kidding me?” I yelled.
She smirked. “Sure sounds like you are!”
People around us started to stare. One boy was laughing his head off.
“What are you people looking at? Haven’t you ever seen people argue before?”
I screamed.
Mel winked at me. “You should go into law, girlfriend. You’ve got reason, style, and class. Go into law.”
I wanted to put my head down and scream. I wanted to wish that I had never seen that club sign. Mel was right. Activists were stuffy, and lawyers were always put down and given rude attitude. I didn’t want to grow up with people dissing me. I already had problems with my fiery red hair and my beacon-like freckles.
“Look, Ivy,” Melanie began in a gentle voice.
I looked up and realized I had tears streaming down my face.
“Do you want to know a secret?”
I nodded vigorously.
“OK. Here it is.” She plopped down beside me in a chummy, story-telling way, beginning in a melodramatic whisper.
“I really admire the activists.”
I opened my eyes wide. My fashion-loving friend, admiring ‘those stuffy, stuck-up activists’?
Melanie saw my wide eyes and decided she had my attention.
“I always trash them, but really, they are my heros! They aren’t stuffy, or stuck-up. In fact, I’ve always wanted to be an activist, but I thought people would tease me and make fun of me.”
I nodded. I knew that feeling all too well.
“So don’t stop yourself like I did.” She looked down.
“That was the biggest mistake of my life. Make a change, don’t turn back.”
She grinned. That was the Mel I knew.
“What do you say we join that club?”
I smiled back. “Lead the way.”

Hi Fellow Bloggers!
Welcome to the world of A Closer Look Foundation. Our staff and faculties have dedicated ourselves to protecting endangered species around the world. So far we have raised $87.34. The latest fundraiser that we have cooked up is a Book Sale for members of A Closer Look only. If all goes as planned, the Book Sale may continue to a school level. We have raised enough money to adopt a species of endangered animals, and the vote will arise shortly.
Sincerely,
The Faculty of A Closer Look Foundation.
